Jason Wilsher-Mills
Jason and his Argonauts on Tour
A 20-21 Visual Arts Centre Touring Exhibition
16 March – 2 June 2024

Born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Jason Wilsher-Mills describes his work as ‘The Beano’ meets ‘I, Daniel Blake’. He uses humour, images from popular culture, childhood memories and a commitment to disability activism to create distinctive and vibrant works influenced by his ‘psychedelic 1970s working-class upbringing’.

For this show, Jason worked with people with disabilities from London, North Lincolnshire, Hull, Dorset, Corby and Manchester. Merging his own experiences of disability with the narratives of other disabled communities, he has created thought-provoking artworks aiming to draw attention to the frustrating and exhausting societal barriers which people with disabilities face on a daily basis.

Since the development of this exhibition, Jason’s career has gone from strength to strength. In 2020 he won the Shape Arts’ Adam Reynolds Award. In 2023 he unveiled a stunning bronze sculpture, ‘Amazonian Caiman God’, in the centre of Wakefield and this March sees the opening of his most ambitious project to date - a major exhibition of work at the Wellcome Collection in central London. This will be closely followed by an exhibition of newly commissioned work for the Venice Biennale. Jason and his Argonauts on Tour is supported by Arts Council England through funding from The National Lottery. To find out more about the artist please visit his website.

The exhibition is pay what you decide - your support is greatly appreciated and helps us bring exciting exhibitions to life.

The exhibition is open Thursday – Monday, 10am – 4pm.
